Sheared flywheel key symptoms

Crap. I pulled the recoil, and there was the flywheel, spinning freely with a loose nut on the end of the crank. These flywheels have the key machined as part of the flywheel, so I can't just get another key for it. Is there any way to machine a slot into the flywheel to accept a steel square stock key? It was a funny shaped wood ruff key that had an offset. I just took a plain steel one and filed the side to fit and haven't had a problem with any of them since. Put a smear on the snout, set the flywheel on without a key, and rock. Turn it 30 degrees, and rock some more. Do this for 10-15 minutes. Add more paste occasionally. Be sure to clean all the paste off of everything before final assembly. The snout and flywheel must be spotlessly clean before reassembly. If the flywheel key was sheared the engine would rotate normally with compression and all but ignition would not happen at the right time and the engine would backfire a lot. If the engine does not rotate I'd be looking for a broken rod or a stuck/bent valve. Either way you're in for a rebuild or a drop-in. The trick is to seat the flywheel by hand as far back as it will go (all the way to the bottom smoothly) without putting the key in a bind, if you do not seat the flywheel and tourque the flywheel nut against the key it WILL shear, this is not a quick change operation, even the stock replacement key will probably need to be shaved some,... You have better luck getting the flywheel to stay in place when it is a tapered flywheel hole over a tapered shaft. I literally just yesterday sheared the key on my 046, I put new crank seals in, put the flywheel back on, rattled it with my electric impact, reassebled and started the saw, flywheeel spun loose and sheared the key, sometimes it doesnt take much, when i reassembled i used the air impact, and yes i know the torque spec, its GOODNTIGHT. Slide a new flywheel key into the flywheel key-way by hand or with long needle-nosed pliers. The flywheel key-way is on the inside of the flywheel crankshaft hole. Slide the flywheel onto the crankshaft, aligning the flywheel key with the key-way groove on the side of the engine crankshaft.
